Attorney Buck-Taylor Attended Conference on Family Violence

April 3, 2012

On March 12, 2012, Attorney Buck-Taylor attended a conference on “Family Violence in Connecticut: Trauma, Trends and Triage.”  The conference was held at the Quinnipiac University School of Law.  Attending the conference were numerous family law practitioners, several judges, several State Representatives, Family Services personnel, mental health professionals and law enforcement personnel.

The conference was co-sponsored by the Connecticut Judicial Branch, the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Quinnipiac University School of Law.  To paraphrase the program, policy makers, advocates, judges and national and state experts were brought together “to assess the status of domestic violence in Connecticut with an aim to offer systematic solutions.”

Presentations included an update on Connecticut’s response to family violence, both in the civil and the criminal court systems.  Lethality assessment tools and the psychological impact of domestic violence trauma on all family members were reviewed by the experts.  Resources available to those affected by domestic violence and practitioners were discussed as well as strategies for the successful representation of clients in this area.

The conference ended with an informed panel discussion as to how Connecticut can improve and strengthen its response to all of the victims of domestic violence and with a commitment to continue this dialogue on a regular basis.
