NEW MILFORD—State Rep. Cecilia Buck-Taylor visited Schaghticoke Middle School recently to get a first-hand look at classroom instruction. She watched teacher Jeff Ferguson lead an Earth Science lesson that had students mix baking soda with water to record signs of temperature change or gas formation. In between classes, Ferguson described to Buck-Taylor the effort that goes into creating a classroom lesson plan—particularly, the challenge of ensuring students at each level of learning are served well by the lesson. The hands-on “chemical mystery lab” she watched the students work through was an example of his effort to keep children excited about learning by offering engaging coursework.
