Rep. Buck-Taylor welcomes New Milford Youth Agency to the State CapitolMay 3, 2013
HARTFORD – New Milford youth joined State Representative Cecilia Buck-Taylor on Wednesday at the State Capitol to learn more about the legislative process in Connecticut.
Representative Buck-Taylor, R-New Milford, welcomed the New Milford Youth Agency to Hartford and explained her job as their delegate, while encouraging them to be civically engaged and active in their community in a positive manner. The group of 13 to 18 year olds, led by Youth Advocate Stacey Kabasakalian, spent a few hours touring the State Capitol complex.
“These youth are the future of New Milford and of the state,” Representative Buck-Taylor said. “The positive opportunities the Youth Agency provides to these students can inspire them to reach farther, to pursue new accomplishments and to become responsible, intelligent, active members of the community. I wish these kids and their program the best, and thoroughly enjoyed meeting them.”
The Town of New Milford established the Youth Agency in 1977, according to the organization, to assess the needs of the youth of New Milford. Through prevention, intervention, and advocacy, the New Milford Youth Agency fosters positive development and provides opportunities for youth to become responsible members of the community.
Most of the Agency’s more than 24 programs and services are offered to the parents and youth of New Milford free of charge, according to the organization. Some of the Agency’s programs include different forms of community service, counseling services, juvenile review panels, a student advisory board, a substance abuse resource library and numerous special events.
In addition, the New Milford Youth Agency provides afterschool care in its Latchkey Program, aimed at kids in grades K-6. Latchkey also provides full-day care during school vacation periods, snow days, and holidays.
“I commend the Youth Agency for its dedicated hard work to the New Milford community. Our town is extremely appreciative to all this organization has done for New Milford’s future residents,” Representative Buck-Taylor added.
